Does a cheque bounce affect your CIBIL score? Not directly, because a credit report is built from account and enquiry records, not from a list of bounced cheques. But if the cheque was your EMI or card payment and the due then goes unpaid, that missed payment can hurt your score. The bounce is the trigger. The late or unpaid due is what gets reported.
What does a credit report actually contain?
CIBIL’s FAQ on understanding your credit score and report describes the report as a record of your credit payment history across loan types and lenders. It lists five parts.
- Personal information, such as name, date of birth and ID numbers
- Contact information
- Employment information, such as income reported by lenders
- Account information, including a month on month record of your payments
- Enquiry information, a record each time a lender checks your report
The page also says the report does not hold details of your savings, investments or fixed deposits. It does not describe a separate section for cheque bounces.
Myth or fact: which claims are true?
| Claim | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Every bounced cheque lowers my score | Myth | The report records account payment status and enquiries, not each cheque |
| A bounced EMI cheque can never matter | Myth | If the EMI stays unpaid, the lender may report the due as late |
| My savings balance shows in the report | Myth | CIBIL says savings and deposits are not part of it |
| Paying again quickly can limit the damage | Fact, in most cases | Lenders report on a schedule, so a prompt fix may avoid a late mark |
Whether a late mark appears depends on the lender’s terms and the reporting dates.
How and when do lenders report to credit bureaus?
The RBI’s Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025 tell lenders to update borrower data fortnightly, as on the 15th and the last day of each month, and to submit it within seven calendar days of that date. The directions also say lenders must send an SMS or email alert when they report a default or days past due status, wherever contact details are available.
So a lender does not report “a cheque bounced”. It reports the status of your account. That is why the same bounce can leave one borrower untouched and mark another.
What does CIBIL say about a failed payment?
CIBIL’s article on failed credit card payments says a single failed payment can pull down your score, that lenders view it negatively, and that a missed payment can affect your score for as far ahead as the next two years.
Illustrative example: two bounced EMI cheques
These numbers are illustrative only and are not BillCut offers.
- Asha’s EMI cheque bounces on the 3rd for lack of funds. She deposits the amount on the 5th, before the due date has lapsed under her loan terms. Her account may show no late payment.
- Ravi’s EMI cheque bounces on the 3rd. He does nothing for six weeks. The EMI stays unpaid across more than one reporting date, so the account is likely to show a late status.
Same bounce, different result. Our post on one missed EMI versus three days late looks at this gap in more detail.
What should I do right after a bounced cheque?
- Pay the amount by another route, such as a bank transfer, as soon as you can.
- Ask the lender in writing whether a late status or a charge was applied.
- Check the bounce charge. Our guide on EMI bounce charges explains how they add up.
- Fix the cause. If it is a salary date mismatch, read about EMI bounces before salary.
- Check your report. RBI directed credit bureaus in 2016 to give each individual one free full credit report every calendar year, with the same content as the most detailed version lenders see.
What if my report shows a wrong entry?
Raise it with the lender and the bureau, with proof of payment. Under the same RBI directions, a complainant is entitled to compensation of Rs 100 per calendar day if a complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days of filing, with some exclusions.
Is there a legal side to a bounced cheque?
A bounced cheque can also carry legal consequences, separate from your score. These depend on the facts, so if you receive a legal notice, speak with a qualified lawyer.
If bounces keep happening because several dues fall close together, you may want to see whether they can be brought into one date and one EMI. Check your options with BillCut

Frequently asked questions
Does a cheque bounce show in my CIBIL report?
CIBIL does not describe a separate cheque bounce section. The report shows account payment history and enquiries, so a bounce matters when it leads to a late or unpaid due.
Can one bounced EMI cheque drop my score?
It can if the EMI stays unpaid and the lender reports it as late. CIBIL says a single failed payment can pull a score down.
How often do lenders update credit bureaus?
RBI directions say lenders must update borrower data fortnightly, as on the 15th and last day of each month.
Will the lender tell me before reporting a default?
The RBI directions say lenders must send an SMS or email alert when reporting default or days past due, where contact details are available.
How long can a missed payment affect my score?
CIBIL says a missed payment can affect your score for as far ahead as the next two years.
Can I get my credit report for free?
Yes. RBI directed credit bureaus to provide one free full credit report to an individual each calendar year, on request.
What if the report is wrong after I paid?
Write to the lender and the bureau with proof of payment. RBI directions provide compensation of Rs 100 per day if a complaint stays unresolved beyond 30 days, with exclusions.
