Is credit score and CIBIL score same? Not exactly. A credit score is a general term for a three digit number that summarises your repayment record. A CIBIL score is one such number, produced by one bureau, TransUnion CIBIL. India has more than one credit bureau, so you can have more than one score. This guide answers the common questions in order.
What is a credit score?
It is a number that shows lenders how you have handled credit. RBI directions say credit information companies must calibrate scores on a scale of 300 to 900, so that they have a common classification. The directions do not say two bureaus will give you the same number, because each may use its own model.
What is a CIBIL score?
CIBIL describes its score as a three digit numeric summary of your credit history, derived from your Credit Information Report. It runs from 300 to 900. So the CIBIL score is a credit score, but not every credit score is a CIBIL score.
What is the difference between the score and the report?
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Credit score | A three digit summary |
| Credit report | The detailed record behind the score |
CIBIL says the report holds personal details, contact details, employment details, account information and enquiries. It also says the report does not contain details of your savings, investments or fixed deposits.
Who are the four credit bureaus?
Credit bureaus are called credit information companies, or CICs, and are registered with RBI. The 2025 Master Direction refers to the four CICs. An earlier RBI circular on CIC membership names Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited, Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark as holders of registration certificates. CIBIL’s own pages refer to TransUnion CIBIL Limited. The current official list sits in Annex I of the Master Direction, so check it for any change.
Why can your scores differ between bureaus?
Each bureau builds its own report from the data lenders send, and report formats are not standardised. Each may also use its own scoring model. Illustrative example: two bureaus may show slightly different numbers for the same person, as one has received a recent update that the other has not yet processed. This is only an example, not a prediction.
How often are reports updated?
RBI says credit information must be updated regularly on a fortnightly basis. CIBIL’s dispute guide adds that its report updates 15 to 30 days after lenders send data, so a recent payment may not appear at once.
How can you check your score for free?
RBI directions provide for one free full credit report, including the credit score, once during a year, on request after you authenticate yourself. Credit bureaus must link to it from their homepages. Read every line of the report for errors.
What should you do if you find a mistake?
Raise a dispute with the bureau. CIBIL says a dispute needs a report not older than 60 days. RBI directions set compensation of Rs. 100 per day when a complaint is not resolved within 30 days. Our guides on the difference between CIBIL, Experian, CRIF and Equifax and how credit bureaus work in India go deeper.
How do you keep your scores healthy?
CIBIL says late payments hurt a score, high utilisation signals rising debt, and too many enquiries may hurt it. See top ways to improve your CIBIL score and how to improve your credit score. If many EMIs strain your budget, a clear plan matters. Pay every due date on time, keep card balances low, and apply for new credit only when you need it. Small habits repeated over months show up in your report.
