Personal loan consolidation means using one new loan to pay off several existing dues, so you repay a single EMI instead of many. It can make life simpler. It does not make debt disappear, and it only helps if the new loan costs less or is easier to manage overall. This post compares it with the usual alternatives and shows who it may suit.
How does personal loan consolidation work?
You apply for one loan. If it is approved, the money goes to clear your existing loans or card balances, and you start repaying the new loan. RBI’s digital lending rules say that disbursement of a loan by the lender shall always be made into the bank account of the borrower. So the loan normally lands in your account, and you then pay off the old dues yourself, in full and on time.
What are the main ways to handle several dues?
| Option | How it works | Worth checking |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidation loan | One new loan clears many dues | Total cost, fees, tenure, closure charges on old loans |
| Pay one by one | Put extra money on the most costly due first | Needs steady surplus cash and discipline |
| Credit card balance transfer or EMI conversion | Card balance moves to a structured repayment | Fees, period and what happens when it ends |
| Talk to each lender | Ask about revised tenure or terms | Lender discretion, and any effect on your record |
What should I read before I choose?
RBI requires lenders to give a Key Facts Statement before the loan contract is signed. It says the APR is the annual cost of credit and includes the interest rate and all other charges, and fees not mentioned in the KFS cannot be charged during the term of the loan unless the borrower explicitly consents. Compare the APR in the KFS of the new loan against what you pay now on your old dues, not just the headline rate.
These rules cover retail and MSME term loans sanctioned on or after 1 October 2024, not credit card receivables.
What about charges for closing the old loans?
Check each old loan agreement. RBI’s pre-payment directions say that no pre-payment charges may be levied on floating rate loans for non-business purposes granted to individuals, and the Directions apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Many personal loans carry a fixed rate, and older loans fall outside that date, so charges can still apply under the lender’s own policy. The same directions say any charge must be disclosed in the sanction letter, agreement and KFS. Ask each lender for a foreclosure statement before you decide.
Is there a cooling-off period if I change my mind?
For digital loans, yes. The RBI digital lending text says borrowers get an explicit option to exit a digital loan by paying the principal and the proportionate APR without any penalty during a cooling-off period, set by the lender’s Board at not less than one day. The lender may keep a one-time processing fee if disclosed upfront in the KFS. Ask your lender what applies to yours.
Who may it suit, and who may not?
It may suit you if:
- you have three or more EMIs and card dues and lose track of dates
- the total cost of the new loan, shown in its KFS, is lower than what you pay now
- your income is steady and the new EMI fits your budget
It may not suit you if:
- the new loan stretches the tenure so far that you pay more in total
- closure and processing fees cancel out any gain
- you have only one or two cheap loans that you can already manage
What does an illustrative example look like?
This is an illustrative example with round numbers, not a BillCut offer. Neha has a card balance with a monthly payment of 6,000 rupees, a personal loan EMI of 4,000 rupees and a second EMI of 3,000 rupees, so she pays 13,000 rupees a month across three dates. A consolidation loan would replace these with one EMI on one date. Whether she gains depends on the new APR, the tenure and the charges to close the old dues. She should compare total repayment, not just the monthly figure.
How can I check the effect on my credit record?
Each application can add an enquiry, and CIBIL says repeated enquiries over a short time can affect your CIBIL Score. So compare options first and apply once. Our guides on managing multiple loans, credit card EMIs versus personal loans, early prepayment pros and cons and paying too much on a personal loan can help you decide.

Frequently asked questions
Does consolidation reduce what I owe?
No. It replaces several dues with one loan. Whether it costs less depends on the new APR, tenure and charges.
What is APR?
RBI defines APR as the annual cost of credit to the borrower, including the interest rate and all other charges tied to the loan.
Will the lender give me a cost summary?
RBI requires a Key Facts Statement before the loan contract is signed, for retail and MSME term loans sanctioned on or after 1 October 2024.
Can I be charged to close my old personal loans?
It depends. RBI bars pre-payment charges on floating rate non-business loans to individuals sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026. Other loans follow the lender’s policy and your agreement.
Where does the new loan money go?
Under RBI’s digital lending rules, disbursal goes into the borrower’s own bank account, not a third party account.
Can I cancel a digital loan after taking it?
RBI requires a cooling-off period of at least one day, set by the lender’s Board, to exit by repaying principal and proportionate APR without penalty.
Can consolidation hurt my credit score?
Applying adds an enquiry, and CIBIL says repeated enquiries over a short time can affect your score. Apply once, after comparing.
