A Plain Guide for Beginners

By BillCut
Last updated: October 2026

What is balance transfer? It means moving what you owe on one loan or card to a different lender, usually to get a lower cost or a simpler repayment. The new lender pays off the old balance, and you then repay the new lender. It can help, but only if the total cost really falls. This guide explains it in plain words, with a simple example and a checklist.

How does a balance transfer work?

Think of it as swapping one bill for another. Here are the usual steps.

You apply to a new lender for the amount you owe.

The lender checks your credit history, income and existing dues.

If approved, the lender settles your old balance directly.

You start repaying the new lender, often as a fixed monthly EMI.

Approval and terms depend on the lender and your profile. Not everyone is approved.

Which dues can be moved?

Balance transfers are common for home loans, and our post on home loan balance transfer benefits explains that case. Some lenders also offer it for personal loans and credit card balances. Whether your dues qualify depends on the lender.

What should you check before you move a balance?

Do not look at the interest rate alone. RBI requires a Key Facts Statement for covered loans, and it says that the APR covers interest and the other charges a lender levies. Compare APR and fees for the old and new loan side by side.

Check

Why it matters

APR of the new offer

Shows the fuller cost, not just the headline rate

Fees on the new loan

Fees can cancel out the interest saving

Pre-payment charges on the old loan

Closing early may carry a cost

New tenor and EMI

A longer tenor can raise the total you pay

Repayment schedule

Shows exactly what you will pay each month

Will you pay a penalty for closing the old loan?

It depends on the loan. For loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026, RBI says lenders shall not levy pre-payment charges on floating rate loans to individuals for non business purposes. For fixed rate loans, any charge follows the lender policy and must be disclosed in the loan papers. Older loans may follow older terms, so read your own agreement.

How does it affect your credit score?

Each application leaves a record. CIBIL says that each loan or credit card application triggers an enquiry that is noted in your credit history. Paying the new EMI on time helps your record over time. Our guide on improving your CIBIL score has more tips. Avoid applying to many lenders at once. Before you apply, check your report for errors. RBI directs credit information companies to provide one free full credit report each calendar year on request.

An illustrative example

This example is illustrative only, uses round numbers and is not a BillCut offer. Suppose someone owes money on two card balances and one personal loan, each with a different due date and a high rate. They move all three into one new loan with one EMI. If the new APR is lower and the tenor is not stretched too much, total cost can fall and life gets simpler. If the tenor is stretched a lot, the total paid can rise even with a lower rate. Always compare totals.

Is a balance transfer right for you?

It can suit you if your current dues cost a lot, you pay on time and you can afford the new EMI. It may not suit you if fees are high or you are likely to run up fresh balances. Our posts on what to do when personal loan interest is too high and credit card EMIs and personal loans help you weigh the choices.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender.

Frequently asked questions

What is balance transfer in simple words?

It is moving what you owe from one lender to another, so the new lender repays the old one and you repay the new one.

Does a balance transfer reduce what I owe?

Not by itself.
